Magnum XL-200

Magnum XL-200 was the first coaster in the world over 200 feet tall.  Its name was used to reference its hieght and the fact that it was "Extra Large." When the coaster opened, it held the title of the world's tallest and fastest complete-circuit roller coaster.  It was the world's tallest coaster for five years until the Pepsi Max Big One opened at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the United Kingdom in 1994.

When Magnum was built, nearly every other big steel coaster had a variety of loops.  It was markedly different as well as larger and faster than other non-looping coasters, so a variety of people thought a new descriptor was needed for this type of ride.  The term "hyper-coaster" was coined to refer to any coaster over 200 feet tall.  Various other sources use the term "hypercoaster" or "hyper coaster" for this large of a ride.
