The Cedar Fair Limited Partnership was formed in 1983 after Cedar Point purchased Valleyfair. Cedar Fair
expanded with the purchase of a handful of parks in the 1990s and early 2000s. The five Paramount Parks were added to the portfolio in 2006. A merger with Six Flags was rejected in 2019 and another offer to be sold to SeaWorld
Entertainment was blocked in 2022. A new merger deal with Six Flags went through in 2024 as Cedar Fair shareholders now owned 51.2% of the new Six Flags Entertainment Corporation while former Six Flags stock holders owned a 48.8% of the
new company. As of 2026, Six Flags owns 27 amusement parks, 15 separately gated water parks, and nearly a dozen resorts and hotels.
