SkiStar Hammarbybacken

Stockholm, Sweden

This hill was created as a 55-meter-tall (180-foot-tall) landfill site. A ski jump opened at Hammarbybacken in 1919. A ski lift and its first ski slope opened in the 1950s. 800,000 cubic meters (21,000,000 square feet) of shaft spoil from the Globenbygget, the project that built the Globe Arena, the complex now called Avicii Arena, raised the top of the hill to 87.6 meters (287 feet) in the 1980s. More landfill from the Hammarby Sjöstad construction project brought the top of the hill to 93.5 meters (307 feet) in 2007. The land is still owned by the city of Stockholm, but SkiStar has been managing the property since 2006. Summertime activities were added to the area in 2022. In the winter, four ski slopes are available.
