PortAventura

Salou, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain

PortAventura Park opened as Port Aventura in 1995. The park was going to be called Tibi Gardens, and it was going to be owned by Anheuser-Busch and the owners of Barcelona's Tibidabo Amusement Park. However, the Tussaud's Group and other investors took over Tibidabo's ownership stakes before the park even opened. In 1998, much of the park's ownership was purchased by Universal Studios. The park was called Universal's Port Aventura in 1999 and Universal Studios Port Aventura in 2000 and 2001. The area expanded in 2002 with the addition of a water park and hotels, and the park's name changed to Port Aventura. The space was removed from the name in 2005, shortly after Universal sold its ownership of the park. Presently, PortAventura, and the adjacent Ferrari World, are owned by the UK-based Investindustrial private equity firm and the US-based Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. investment company.
