Knoebels Amusement Resort
Elysburg, Pennsylvania
Henry Knoebel opened this park on July 4th, 1926. It is still owned and operated by the Knoebel family. Knoebels remains the largest park with free admission. In fact, there is no main gate or entrance. Guests can come and enjoy the picnic areas, shows, and park as they please. The Grand Carousel was built in 1913 and still allows riders to grab for brass rings. The Haunted Mansion is one of the most exciting dark rides around.
Presently, the park is building Flying Turns, a wooden coaster type that hasn't been seen in over half a century! Its beautiful track resembles a bobsled run, but it has been under construction and testing since 2006. The park also plans to open Black Diamond in 2011. This will be a recreation of the Golden Nugget at New Jersey's Dinosaur Beach.
Jet Star, a Schwarzkopf coaster built in 1972, ran here from 1977 to 1992. It then operated at Morey's Piers until 1999.
Whirlwind, pictured below, was here from 1993 to 2004. It is now at Costa Rica's Parque de Diversiones where it is known as Bocaraca.
High Speed Thrill Ride, pictures below, was here from 1955 until 2008.
